EU Official Warns Gaza Conditions Could Worsen Under Expanded Israeli Control
In a statement posted on social media, the EU’s crisis management commissioner, Hadja Lahbib, said: “Gaza’s humanitarian space is further shrinking.”
She added: “As Israeli military control expands, shifting lines hamper aid workers & cut essential services, including clean water, for those in need. Families are trapped between boundaries that move without warning. International Humanitarian Law must be respected.”
The comments followed recent reports indicating that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel currently controls approximately 60% of the Gaza Strip and intends to increase that figure to 70%.
According to reports, Netanyahu did not provide details on how the proposed expansion would be carried out.
Israeli forces have already altered operational boundaries in parts of Gaza under a phased ceasefire arrangement that originated from a US-backed proposal aimed at ending the conflict.
Palestinian sources and Hamas officials have argued that the effective boundary has moved deeper into Gaza in recent months, reducing the territory available to civilians and placing additional pressure on an already severe humanitarian situation.
The European Union has repeatedly called for broader humanitarian access and adherence to international humanitarian law. Aid organizations have continued to warn of shortages affecting clean water supplies, medical resources, and safe routes for civilians seeking assistance or movement within the territory.
