Slovak Premier Rejects EU Initiative to Cut Russian Nuclear Fuel Imports
During a press briefing, Fico emphasized that such a move would jeopardize the functionality of Slovakia’s nuclear power plants.
Last month, the European Commission introduced the REPowerEU Roadmap, a strategic plan aiming to phase out the EU’s dependence on Russian energy sources. This framework outlines a step-by-step approach to cease imports of Russian natural gas, oil, and nuclear materials throughout the EU’s 27 member countries, according to the Commission’s statement.
Fico criticized the proposal by stating, “We've repeatedly declared this idea of the European Commission to be harmful, ideological and damaging to the competitiveness of the European Union.” He further assured that Slovakia will actively advocate within the EU to protect its national interests during the legislative process related to oil, gas, and nuclear fuel policies.
As reported by the World Nuclear Association, Slovakia operates five nuclear reactors that contribute to half of the country’s electricity production as of April 2025.
